- Instituto Cervantes - Berlin — The Spanish state's language and culture institute. Useful twice over, for Spanish courses if you are staying a while and for talks and screenings if you are not. (52.5216, 13.4048)
- Brotfabrik Berlin — An old bread factory in Weißensee, now a small cinema, stage and gallery. Very local and German-speaking, which is exactly the point if you want an evening with no other visitors in it. (52.5525, 13.4305)
- Tschechisches Zentrum Berlin | Czech Centre Berlin — The Czech Centre, one of the busier national institutes in town, with film, design and literature events. Worth a look at the listings for anything subtitled. (52.5115, 13.3846)
- Haus für Poesie — A poetry house that runs the long-standing poesiefestival berlin. Readings are frequently multilingual, with the original and a German version side by side. (52.5401, 13.4138)

The foreign institutes are the city's cheapest good night out
In Berlin a Kulturzentrum can mean three quite different things: a national institute run by a foreign government, a converted industrial building with a stage and a bar, or a neighbourhood hall for a diaspora community. The national institutes (Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian and more) are the ones a visitor gets most from. Many of their talks, screenings and openings cost nothing or very little, and the listing usually states the language, so read that line before you set out.
