A Berlin pension is usually a flat with a doorbell
A classic Berlin Pension or Hotel-Pension occupies one or two floors of an old residential building. You ring a bell at the street door, climb the stairs or take a small lift, and the reception is a desk in what was once a hallway. That shapes the stay: rooms tend to be large with high ceilings, but reception may not be staffed round the clock, so tell them your arrival time in advance and ask how late check-in runs. Lifts are not a given in pre-war buildings either; ask if you have heavy luggage.
