Berlin's local fish is freshwater
Berlin sits about two hundred kilometres from the Baltic, so the sea fish here has travelled. What is actually caught locally comes from the Havel, the Spree and Brandenburg's many lakes: Zander (pike-perch), eel, pike, perch and trout. Smoked fish is the regional tradition, and a smokehouse by the water is closer to the real thing than a white-tablecloth dining room. When a menu names a lake or the Müritz, the fish probably came in that morning.
