Chay means vegetarian, and Berlin has a lot of it
Several places in this set are Vietnamese vegetarian kitchens, and Berlin has an unusually large number of them. The city's Vietnamese community goes back to both West German refugee resettlement and East German contract workers, and Buddhist chay (vegetarian) cooking came with it. The catch for a strict vegan is that vegetarisch is not vegan: a place with vegetarian in its name may use egg or dairy in some dishes. Ask for vegan explicitly — it is a word every Berlin kitchen understands.
