In Berlin, vegan is the default and vegetarian needs a question
Berlin menus mark vegan far more often than vegetarisch, and the gap catches people out. A dish labelled vegetarian in Germany can still contain cheese made with animal rennet, which most traditional hard cheeses use. If that matters to you, ask about Lab (rennet) or order from the vegan column, which in this city is usually longer anyway. A few listings here are cafés, shops or bistros rather than sit-down restaurants, so check opening hours before a special trip.
