Before you go

Changhua at a glance

Taiwan's most populous county and the smallest by area on the main island: a flat, farmed coastal plain south of Taichung. Lukang, a major trading port from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s, keeps a dense old town of temples and lanes; Changhua City has the Bagua Mountain Buddha, a working 1922 railway roundhouse and the style of ba-wan the rest of Taiwan copies.

Known for

  • Lukang Longshan Temple 鹿港龍山寺

On its present site since 1786; known for its woodcarving, stone dragon columns and theater stage.

  • Lukang ox-tongue cakes 鹿港牛舌餅

Long, flat flaky pastries, Lukang's signature snack along with oyster omelets.

  • Changhua ba-wan 彰化肉圓

Translucent starch dumplings stuffed with pork; thought to have started in Beidou in 1898, and Changhua's version is the one most copied.

  • Bagua Mountain Great Buddha 八卦山大佛

26 m Buddha on the hill above Changhua City, part of the Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area, with a skywalk nearby.

  • Changhua Roundhouse 彰化扇形車庫

1922 fan-shaped locomotive shed with a turntable, still used to service trains and open to visitors; the county says it is the only one left in Taiwan.

  • Grey-faced buzzard migration 八卦山灰面鵟鷹過境

Thousands of buzzards stream north over Bagua Mountain each spring, from about the spring equinox to Qingming.

Getting there

For Changhua City and Lukang, take THSR to Taichung (about 1 h from Taipei), then a short TRA ride from Xinwuri to Changhua Station, the junction of the coastal and inland main lines. THSR Changhua Station is in Tianzhong, about 1 h 15 min from Taipei, with express bus 7 to TRA Tianzhong (about 10 min) and Yuanlin (about 30 min). Lukang has no railway: Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 6936 runs from HSR Taichung via Changhua Station to Lukang, and 6936A goes direct.

Getting around

Changhua Bus and other local buses link Changhua Station with Lukang, Yuanlin and the coast. YouBike has run in the county since 2014, with stations in Changhua City, Yuanlin and Lukang; the plain is flat, so cycling between Lukang's lanes is easy. For the coast, a car or taxi is simpler.

When to go

October to April is the dry season, though the coast is windy under the northeast monsoon. Grey-faced buzzards pass over Bagua Mountain from the spring equinox to Qingming (late March to early April), and the Dajia Mazu pilgrimage crosses Changhua in April. Summers are hot, with typhoons possible roughly July to October.

Local tip

Don't use THSR Changhua Station for Changhua City or Lukang: it is in Tianzhong in the south of the county, and HSR Taichung is closer to both.

By bus; there is no train. Lukang refused a railway when the lines were being built, which helped its port decline and its old town survive. Take Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 6936 from HSR Taichung via Changhua Station, the 6936A that skips Changhua City, or a Changhua Bus service from Changhua Station.

When and where can I see the raptor migration?

Grey-faced buzzards fly north over Bagua Mountain from about the spring equinox to Qingming, late March to early April. As of 2026 the county's raptor-watching event uses the platform at Wende Elementary School in Fenyuan Township.

What language can I message NUM in for Changhua?
