Chiayi at a glance
Chiayi City is a compact city on the Chianan Plain and the lowland end of the Alishan Forest Railway, whose line starts at Chiayi Station. Getting there
From Taipei, the HSR takes about 1 h 30 min to THSR Chiayi Station, which is in Taibao City, Chiayi County, not in the city. The Chiayi BRT runs from the HSR station to downtown in about 30 min. TRA trains on the Western Line stop at Chiayi Station in the centre. Chiayi Airport, in Shuishang, has only a few domestic flights (Kinmen, Penghu), so from Taoyuan Airport take the Airport MRT to THSR Taoyuan Station and the HSR south.
Getting around
Downtown Chiayi City is small enough to walk, and YouBike stations cover both the city and the county. City buses and the BRT link the centre with the HSR station; for the coast and the county towns, a scooter or car is easier.
When to go
Winter and spring are drier. More than 60% of the year's rain falls from June to August, and typhoons are possible from about July to October. In the Alishan cherry blossom season (March to April), book trains and buses up the mountain early.
Local tip
If you are going up to Alishan, stay near Chiayi Station: the forest railway leaves from it, and the 7322C and 7322D buses to Alishan leave from the TRA station. Book the train online; tickets open 15 days ahead.
