Before you go

Green Island at a glance

Green Island is a small volcanic island off Taitung, ringed by a coast road and coral reefs. People come to snorkel and dive, to soak in the seawater hot spring at Zhaori, and to visit the former political prison that is now the White Terror Memorial Park.

Known for

  • Zhaori Hot Spring 朝日溫泉

Seawater hot spring on the shore; the East Coast Scenic Area calls it one of only three saltwater hot springs in the world.

  • Green Island White Terror Memorial Park 白色恐怖綠島紀念園區

Former prison for political prisoners under martial law, opened as a memorial park in 2001.

  • Reef diving and snorkeling 潛水・浮潛

More than 10 shore dive sites; the Tourism Administration puts visibility at 40–50 m.

  • Niutou Mountain grassland 牛頭山大草原

Open headland grassland, a sunrise and photo stop on the ring road.

  • Seaweed shaved ice 海草冰

Shaved ice topped with seaweed jelly, a Green Island specialty.

  • Peanut tofu 花生豆腐

Soft peanut 'tofu' pudding, sold around the island.

Getting there

Ferries leave Taitung's Fugang Fishing Harbor for Nanliao Harbor (about 50 min to 1 h), with more sailings in summer. Daily Air flies 19-seat planes from Taitung Airport (about 15–20 min). From Taipei, first get to Taitung by train (about 4 h) or plane (about 1 h).

Getting around

Most visitors rent a scooter for the ring road, about an hour around. You need a licence valid for motorcycles (for foreign visitors, an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle endorsement). An island bus runs the coast road, and bicycles are the no-licence fallback.

When to go

The season runs roughly April to September. Typhoons (about July to October) cancel ferries. From October to March the northeast monsoon makes the crossing rough and unreliable, and many guesthouses and restaurants close or cut back.

Local tip

Don't plan a tight connection out of Taitung. When the sea turns rough, ferries are cancelled at short notice and the few flights fill fast.
