Hsinchu at a glance
Hsinchu City is the old walled town of Zhuqian on the coast; Hsinchu County is the Hakka hill country behind it. People come for the City God Temple and the rice-noodle and meatball stalls around it, the windy 17 km coastline, and day trips to Hakka towns such as Beipu and Neiwan. The Hsinchu Science Park, founded in 1980 and home to much of Taiwan's chip industry, sits on the city's eastern side.

The only survivor of the Zhuqian city wall, rebuilt in brick and stone from 1826; the rest was demolished in 1902. A national monument in the middle of the old town.
17 km coastline 十七公里海岸線
Coastal bike path from Nanliao Fishing Harbor south to the Nangang bird-watching area, past the Xiangshan Wetland crab boardwalk; about 34 km there and back.
Beipu Old Street and lei cha 北埔老街・擂茶
Hakka town in Hsinchu County with the Jinguangfu (金廣福) mansion and Citian Temple; lei cha is tea ground with sesame, peanuts and beans, then stirred with hot water.
Getting there
THSR Hsinchu Station is in Zhubei, Hsinchu County, about 35 min from Taipei and one stop from HSR Taoyuan, which the Airport MRT reaches from Taoyuan Airport in 12 to 19 min. From the HSR station, Liujia Line local trains reach TRA Hsinchu Station in the old town in about 25 min (some need a change at Zhuzhong). TRA trains from Taipei take about 1 to 2 hours, and buses about 1 h 20 min to 1 h 30 min.
Getting around
City buses link the old town, the Science Park and Nanliao harbor; YouBike 2.0 has run in Hsinchu County since June 2022 and in Hsinchu City since July 2022. For Neiwan, take the Neiwan Line from TRA Hsinchu Station; Beipu and the other hill towns are easier by car or taxi.
When to go
October to January is the driest stretch but very windy: the autumn and winter northeast monsoon gave Hsinchu its 'Windy City' name. Most rain falls from February to September, with typhoons possible roughly July to October. Tung blossoms whiten the Hakka hills from about April into May, and Beipu holds a torch parade on the Lantern Festival (15th day of the first lunar month).
Local tip
Bring a windbreaker from autumn to early spring, and ride the 17 km coast path north to south, starting at Nanliao, so the northeast wind is behind you.

By the Neiwan Line, a 27.9 km TRA branch from Hsinchu Station up the valley to Neiwan in Hengshan Township, served by local trains. It also meets the Liujia Line at Zhuzhong, so you can ride to Neiwan from the HSR station with one change.
