Hualien is the long east-coast county squeezed between the Central Mountain Range and the Pacific, with Hualien City as the usual base. Most visitors come for Taroko Gorge, the cliff-and-surf coast road (Provincial Highway 11) and the rice country of the East Rift Valley. Getting there
From Taipei Main Station, TRA express trains (Puyuma, Taroko and Tze-Chiang) reach Hualien Station in about 2 h 15 min at best and about 2 h 30 min on many runs. From Taoyuan Airport, take the Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station first (about 40 min). Hualien Airport has only a handful of flights a week from Taipei Songshan, so the train is the normal way in.
Getting around
Hualien City is walkable, with taxis for longer hops; for the coast and the East Rift Valley, rent a scooter or car or use local TRA trains. Taiwan Tourist Shuttle route 310 runs from Hualien Transfer Station to the Taroko Visitor Center.
When to go
March to May and October to November are usually the most settled months. Typhoons (roughly July to October) can close mountain and coast roads; in September 2025 the Matai'an Creek barrier-lake flood hit Guangfu Township. Amis communities hold their harvest festivals (Ilisin) in summer, between about July and September.
Local tip
TRA tickets open 28 days ahead at midnight, and weekend and holiday seats between Taipei and Hualien go fast, so book the moment your date opens.

Yes. Hualien City, the coast and the East Rift Valley are open to visitors. The lasting closures are inside Taroko Gorge: as of late September 2026, Shakadang, Swallow Grotto, Baiyang and the Tunnel of Nine Turns were still closed, and Provincial Highway 8 through the gorge opened only in set time windows.
Can I see Hualien without a car?
Partly. Trains run down the East Rift Valley to towns such as Ruisui and Yuli, and Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 310 goes from Hualien Transfer Station to the Taroko Visitor Center. The coast road (Highway 11) and smaller sights are much easier with a scooter, a car or a hired driver.
