Before you go

Kaohsiung at a glance

Kaohsiung is Taiwan's main port city and its third-largest by population, at the southern end of the high-speed line. People come for the harbour and Cijin Island, old warehouses turned into an arts district, the temples on Lotus Pond, and night markets, and use it as the base for Pingtung, Kenting and Fo Guang Shan.

Known for

  • Lotus Pond and the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas 蓮池潭 龍虎塔

Man-made lake in Zuoying lined with temples; you walk in through the dragon and out through the tiger.

  • Cijin Island 旗津

A five-minute ferry from Gushan: a lighthouse, the Cihou Fort, a beach and a street of seafood stalls.

  • Pier-2 Art Center 駁二藝術特區

Harbour warehouses from 1973 in Yancheng, now galleries and public art on the light rail.

  • Dome of Light 光之穹頂

Stained-glass ceiling in Formosa Boulevard metro station, where the Red and Orange lines cross.

  • Liuhe and Ruifeng night markets 六合夜市 · 瑞豐夜市

Two well-known night markets: Liuhe is a short walk from Formosa Boulevard station, Ruifeng is near Kaohsiung Arena station.

  • Fo Guang Shan and the Buddha Museum 佛光山

Buddhist monastery in Dashu District with a 40 m metal Buddha next door; a bus runs there from HSR Zuoying.

Getting there

The HSR runs from Taipei to Zuoying Station, its southern terminus, in about 1 h 35 min to 2 h depending on stops. Zuoying shares a building with TRA Xinzuoying Station and connects to the Kaohsiung MRT Red Line. Kaohsiung International Airport, in Xiaogang, has international flights and its own Red Line station. From Taoyuan Airport, take the Airport MRT to THSR Taoyuan Station, then the HSR south.

Getting around

The MRT Red and Orange lines and the Circular Light Rail, a full loop since 1 January 2024, cover the centre; iPASS and EasyCard both work. Ferries cross from Gushan to Cijin, and YouBike stations are spread across the city.

When to go

October to April is dry and warm. May to September is hot and wet, with typhoons possible from about July to October. Lantern Festival displays line the Love River in February or March, and dragon boat races are held on the river for the Dragon Boat Festival in May or June.

Local tip

City signs and several MRT stations use older romanisations: Cianjhen (前鎮), Fongshan (鳳山), Nanzih (楠梓), Sinsing (新興), Ciaotou (橋頭). Match the Chinese characters, not the spelling, when you navigate.
