Kinmen at a glance
Kinmen is a group of Taiwan-administered islands off the Chinese coast, about 10 km from Xiamen and about 187 km from Taiwan's main island. For decades it was a front line, and tunnels, bunkers and the 1949 Battle of Guningtou are part of the landscape, alongside old Minnan-style villages, wind lion gods and kaoliang distilling. About a quarter of the county is Kinmen National Park.
Known for
Kaoliang liquor 金門高粱酒
Strong clear sorghum spirit, Kinmen's signature product, with about three quarters of Taiwan's kaoliang market.
Gongtang peanut candy 貢糖
Pounded peanut-and-sugar candy, the usual Kinmen gift.
Artillery-shell knives 砲彈鋼刀
Kitchen knives forged from the steel of old artillery shells.
Wind lion gods 風獅爺
Stone lion guardians set up around villages against the wind.
Zhaishan Tunnel 翟山坑道
A-shaped boat tunnel blasted into granite in Jincheng in 1961–66, now part of the national park and a concert venue.
Juguang Tower 莒光樓
Memorial tower in Jincheng (1952–53) to soldiers killed at Guningtou, now a history gallery.
Getting there
Fly to Kinmen Shangyi Airport from Taipei Songshan (about 1 h 10 min, many flights a day) or from Taichung, Kaohsiung, Tainan or Chiayi (about 1 h), on Uni Air or Mandarin Airlines. From Taoyuan Airport, connect via Taipei Songshan.
Getting around
Kinmen County runs public buses across Greater Kinmen, and the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle offers half-day themed bus routes. The Kinmen Bridge (opened October 2022) links Greater Kinmen and Lieyu by road. The main sites are spread out, so many visitors rent a scooter or car.
When to go
Autumn (October to November) is usually the most comfortable, and migratory birds winter on the islands. From March to May, fog regularly grounds flights. Summer is hot and humid, with typhoon risk roughly July to October.
Local tip
If you travel between March and May, leave a buffer day before any onward connection: fog closes the airport most springs and can strand thousands of passengers.
