Before you go

Matsu at a glance

Matsu is a chain of Taiwan-administered granite islands off the Fujian coast; Dongyin, the northernmost, is only about 10 nautical miles (19 km) from the mainland. Visitors come for the stone villages, Cold War tunnels and Fuzhou-style food, and from spring into early summer for the glowing 'blue tears' along the shore. Many locals also speak the Matsu dialect of Fuzhounese (Eastern Min).

Known for

  • Blue tears 藍眼淚

Bioluminescent plankton that light up the shoreline at night, peaking April to June.

  • Beihai Tunnel (Nangan) 北海坑道

Sea-level tunnel cut by soldiers in the late 1960s to hide boats; now toured on foot or by small boat.

  • Qinbi Village 芹壁聚落

Cluster of granite stone houses on Beigan, some now guesthouses.

  • Tunnel 88 八八坑道

Former military tunnel on Nangan, now used to age the local kaoliang.

  • Laojiu rice wine 馬祖老酒

Fuzhou-style yellow rice wine (青紅酒); also cooked into laojiu noodles (老酒麵線).

  • Jiguang bun 繼光餅

Ring-shaped baked bun, split and filled; an everyday Matsu snack.

Getting there

Fly from Taipei Songshan to Nangan (about 50 min, Uni Air and Mandarin Airlines) or to Beigan (about 50 min, Uni Air); Uni Air also flies Taichung–Nangan (about 1 h 15 min). The overnight ferry from Keelung (Taima Star or New Taima) takes about 8–10 h and alternates between calling at Nangan or Dongyin first. A daytime fast ferry from Taipei Port to Nangan (about 3 h) ran only as a June trial in 2026.

Getting around

Nangan and Beigan have island buses, taxis and scooter rental (you need a motorcycle licence). Boats link Nangan's Fu'ao Harbor with Beigan (about 20 min), Juguang (Dongju and Xiju) and Dongyin, with schedules that change with the weather.

When to go

Late spring through early autumn has the calmest seas, and the blue tears peak April to June. Fog is common from about March to June and closes the airports. Winters are cold, cloudy and windy.

Local tip

Spring fog can cancel flights for days. Keep a spare day, and treat the overnight Keelung ferry as your fallback.
