Miaoli at a glance

Getting there
THSR Miaoli Station is in Houlong, about 45 min from Taipei; it links to TRA Fengfu Station for local trains to Miaoli City and Sanyi. From Taoyuan Airport, take the Airport MRT to HSR Taoyuan (12 to 19 min) and change to the HSR. TRA's inland line serves Miaoli City and Sanyi; the coastal line serves Zhunan, Houlong, Tongxiao and Yuanli.
Getting around
Buses are thin outside Miaoli City and Toufen. The Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Nanzhuang Line runs from TRA Zhunan Station (east exit) via Sanwan and Shitoushan to Nanzhuang, and YouBike 2.0 has stations in Miaoli City, Toufen, Zhunan and Houlong since 2024. For Sanyi's old line, Dahu and Tai'an, use a taxi, rented scooter or car.
When to go
Winter into spring is strawberry season in Dahu. Tung blossoms flower from about mid-April into May. The Lantern Festival brings Bombing the Dragon to Miaoli City, and each spring the Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage walks from Tongxiao to Beigang in Yunlin on a route that is not fixed: the walkers follow the goddess's palanquin. Typhoons are possible roughly July to October.
Local tip
Shengxing and Longteng are not on any regular train or bus route: get off TRA at Sanyi and take a taxi or rented scooter, or book the Old Mountain Line rail bike, which runs on the old track around the two.

Not a regular one. The line between Sanyi and Houli (Taichung), opened in 1908, was bypassed in 1998, and since then only occasional special steam runs have used it. Today electric rail bikes run on a section of the old track around Shengxing and Longteng; reach them from TRA Sanyi Station by taxi or scooter.
