Before you go

Nantou at a glance

Taiwan's only landlocked county and its second largest, rising from the Puli basin to Yushan (3,952 m) and the Hehuanshan pass. Most visitors come for Sun Moon Lake, the high farms of Cingjing, the forest at Xitou and the tea hills of Lugu. The 1999 Jiji earthquake hit hardest here, and rebuilding reshaped places such as Taomi village outside Puli.

Known for

  • Sun Moon Lake 日月潭

Mountain lake in Yuchi Township and the county's main draw.

  • Hehuanshan and Wuling 合歡山・武嶺

Provincial Highway 14A crosses the Central Range at Wuling, 3,275 m, the highest paved road in Taiwan; sunrise, alpine trails and, in cold snaps, snow.

  • Cingjing 清境

Highland farm area in Ren'ai Township on the road up to Hehuanshan; the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Cingjing line (6658) climbs from Puli.

  • Xitou Nature Education Area 溪頭自然教育園區

Mountain forest park in Lugu Township run by National Taiwan University's Experimental Forest, with walking trails.

  • Dong Ding oolong 凍頂烏龍茶

Roasted oolong named for Dong Ding mountain in Lugu Township, where it has been grown for about 150 years.

  • Jiji Line 集集線

Branch railway from Ershui through Jiji to Checheng; landslides shut part of it in 2021, and it reopened end to end in June 2026.

Getting there

Nantou has no HSR or main-line station. Take THSR to Taichung (about 1 h from Taipei), then a Taiwan Tourist Shuttle: the Sun Moon Lake line (1 to 1.5 h) or the Xitou line (6883); the Cingjing line (6658) runs up from Puli. The Jiji Line branches off the West Coast line at Ershui in Changhua, and Kuo-Kuang runs direct buses from Taipei to Sun Moon Lake in about 4 h.

Getting around

Local buses link the towns but thin out in the mountains, so the tourist shuttles are the practical public option. Most visitors to Lugu, Ren'ai and Xinyi drive or hire a car; mountain roads can close in heavy rain, and on Hehuanshan overnight in cold snaps.

When to go

Autumn and spring are the most reliable. Summer rain and typhoons (roughly July to October) close mountain roads, trails and forest recreation areas at short notice. In winter cold snaps, Highway 14A between Cuifeng and Dayuling closes overnight when ice or snow is forecast.

Local tip

Before heading up to Hehuanshan, Aowanda or Cingjing, check the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency's recreation-area notices and the highway road-status page: closures are often announced the day before or on the day.
