Before you go

New Taipei at a glance

The municipality that wraps around Taipei on every side, and Taiwan's most populous city. Its western suburbs (Banqiao, Zhonghe, Sanchong, Xinzhuang) are dense commuter towns on the metro; visitors mostly come for the edges: the north-coast rocks at Yehliu, sky lanterns on the Pingxi rail line, and the craft towns of Yingge and Sanxia. Tamsui and Jiufen are also in New Taipei.

Known for

  • Pingxi sky lanterns 平溪天燈

Old coal-mining villages on the Pingxi rail line (Shifen, Pingxi, Jingtong); mass lantern releases are held around the Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the first lunar month.

  • Yehliu Geopark 野柳地質公園

Wanli District cape of wind-carved hoodoo rocks; the eroding Queen's Head is the famous one.

  • Yingge ceramics 鶯歌陶瓷

Pottery town with the city-run Yingge Ceramics Museum (opened 2000), walkable from Yingge Station.

  • Sanxia Zushi Temple 三峽祖師廟

Founded 1769; its post-war rebuilding, led by painter Li Mei-shu, is known for dense stone and wood carving. Sits beside Sanxia Old Street.

  • Shenkeng tofu 深坑豆腐

Shenkeng calls itself the tofu capital; grilled, braised and stinky tofu along its old street.

Getting there

Most urban districts (Banqiao, Zhonghe, Yonghe, Xindian, Sanchong, Xinzhuang, Tamsui) are on the Taipei Metro, roughly 10 to 40 min from Taipei Main Station; HSR and TRA trains also stop at Banqiao. From Taoyuan Airport the Airport MRT stops in Linkou, Taishan, Xinzhuang and Sanchong. For the northeast (Ruifang, Pingxi, Fulong), take TRA to Ruifang, about 40 min to 1 h.

Getting around

One EasyCard covers the Taipei Metro, the Circular Line, the Danhai and Ankeng light rails, the Sanying Line (Dingpu to Yingge, opened in June 2026), buses and YouBike. The coast and mountain districts depend on TRA, infrequent buses or a car.

When to go

Spring and autumn. From roughly October to March the northeast monsoon brings frequent rain to Ruifang, Pingxi and the north coast. Summer is beach season at Fulong, but typhoons (roughly July to October) and heavy rain regularly suspend the Pingxi Line. The sky-lantern releases fall at the Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the first lunar month (February or March).

Local tip

Ruifang Station is the hub for Jiufen, Houtong, the Pingxi Line and the northeast coast. The Pingxi Line was shut from late 2025 to the end of January 2026 after rain damage and, as of 2026, still closes after heavy rain, so check Taiwan Railway notices the day before; bus 795 from Muzha MRT to Pingxi (about 55 min) is the fallback.

Questions

Questions about NUM in New Taipei

How many restaurants does NUM know in New Taipei?

5,901 in and around New Taipei, from the open map data NUM builds its directory on. NUM does not list all of them at you. It picks three that fit what you asked for, and says why.

Does NUM cover street food and markets in New Taipei?

Yes: 1,050 street-food spots and 171 markets. Ask it what is open now and it will answer for the hour you are actually in.

Can NUM help me find a hotel in New Taipei?

NUM knows 247 places to stay here. It finds the one that fits and hands you to the licensed partner who books it, so you always know who you are booking with.

Is New Taipei the same as Taipei?

No. New Taipei is a separate special municipality (Taipei County until 2010) that completely surrounds Taipei City. The two share one metro and fare card, so the border is easy to miss, but Banqiao, Tamsui, Jiufen, Yehliu and Pingxi are all New Taipei.

How do I get to Pingxi and Shifen for the sky lanterns?

Take TRA to Ruifang and change to the Pingxi Line, or take bus 795 from Muzha MRT station (about 55 min). The line was closed for months in late 2025 and January 2026 after rain damage and, as of 2026, still shuts after heavy rain, so check before going. Releasing a lantern from the railway tracks breaks the Railway Act and can be fined.

What language can I message NUM in for New Taipei?

Whatever you write in. NUM answers in the language of your message, and in the script you used, which for Chinese means Traditional stays Traditional.

Does it cost anything?

Not for travelers. Booking through NUM is free and nothing is added to your bill. NUM Plus and NUM Pro are optional and only add room.
