Penghu at a glance
Penghu is a flat, windy archipelago in the Taiwan Strait, about 50 km west of Taiwan's main island. People come in summer for beaches, island-hopping, basalt coastlines and the old stone fish traps in the shallows, and for the fireworks festival over Magong harbor.

Penghu International Fireworks Festival 澎湖國際海上花火節
Fireworks over the water on set weeknights through late spring and summer, mainly at the Guanyin Pavilion area in Magong; the 2026 festival ran from May to August.
Getting there
Fly to Magong on Uni Air or Mandarin Airlines from Taipei Songshan (about 50 min), Kaohsiung (about 40 min) or Taichung, or on Uni Air from Tainan or Chiayi. By sea, a car ferry sails from Kaohsiung in about 4.5 h. Fast boats from Budai in Chiayi take about 80–90 min and run from April to September.
Getting around
Renting a scooter or car is the usual way around the bridged main islands (Magong, Huxi, Baisha, Xiyu); public buses run infrequently. The southern islands (Qimei, Wang'an) and the northern islets need a boat or, for Qimei, a short Daily Air flight.
When to go
April to September is the season: calmer seas, boats running and the fireworks festival on set weeknights. From October to March the northeast monsoon blows hard, the Budai ferry and many outer-island boats stop, and some businesses close. Typhoons are a risk roughly July to October.
Local tip
Do the outer islands (Qimei's Twin Hearts, Wang'an) on a morning with a calm forecast, and keep a spare day, because boats are cancelled when the wind picks up.
