Pingtung at a glance
Pingtung is a long county running from the Kaohsiung border to the southern tip of Taiwan. Its plain holds Hakka farm towns and the fishing port of Donggang, the mountains to the east are Paiwan and Rukai country, and offshore lies Xiaoliuqiu, a small coral island known for sea turtles. Most visitors pass through on the way to Kenting; the county's own draws are the island, Donggang's tuna and temple festivals, and the Hakka and indigenous townships.

Getting there
Take the HSR from Taipei to Zuoying (about 1 h 35 min to 2 h), then a TRA train from Xinzuoying, in the same building, to Pingtung Station: about 30 min on an express, 45 min on a local. For Xiaoliuqiu, ferries leave Donggang for Baisha or Dafu ports (about 30 min); Donggang has no train station, so go by bus or taxi from Kaohsiung. As of 2026 the HSR does not reach Pingtung; an extension is planned.
Getting around
TRA trains on the Pingtung line link Pingtung City, Chaozhou and Fangliao, and Pingtung Bus routes run on to Hengchun. For the mountain townships and the coast you need a scooter or car. On Xiaoliuqiu, people rent scooters and electric scooters near Baisha harbour.
When to go
October to April is dry and warm. Summer is hot and wet, with typhoons possible from about July to October. Donggang's bluefin tuna festival falls in late spring and early summer, and the three-yearly King Boat Festival is held in autumn (2024, next due 2027).
Local tip
On Xiaoliuqiu, the intertidal zones can only be visited with a guide and visitor numbers are capped, so arrange a guided slot before you cross. Ask the ferry staff which island port your boat uses: it can be Baisha or Dafu.
