Before you go

Taichung at a glance

Taiwan's second-largest city by population, spread from the Taiwan Strait coast to the Central Mountain Range. Visitors come for night markets, the National Taichung Theater and the newer Xitun district, sun cakes and milk tea, and day trips to the Gaomei Wetlands or the mountains. It is drier than northern Taiwan.

Known for

  • Fengjia Night Market 逢甲夜市

Grew up from 1963 beside Feng Chia University in Xitun and now spreads over Wenhua Road, Fengjia Road, Fuxing Road and Xi'an Street.

  • National Taichung Theater 臺中國家歌劇院

Toyo Ito's curving, cave-like opera house in Xitun, fully opened in 2016.

  • Gaomei Wetlands 高美濕地

Over 300 ha of tidal flats in Qingshui District, lined with wind turbines; reached by bus from TRA Qingshui Station.

  • Sun cake 太陽餅

Flaky round pastry filled with maltose, first made in the Taichung area; the standard boxed souvenir.

  • Pearl milk tea 珍珠奶茶

Taichung is widely credited as where tapioca-pearl milk tea was first served, at a local teahouse.

  • Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage 大甲媽祖遶境進香

Nine days and eight nights, over 300 km on foot from Jenn Lann Temple in Dajia through Changhua, Yunlin and Chiayi and back, setting out in the third lunar month.

Getting there

THSR Taichung Station is in Wuri District, about 1 h from Taipei and about 40 min from HSR Taoyuan, which the Airport MRT reaches from Taoyuan Airport in 12 to 19 min. A bridge links it to TRA Xinwuri Station for trains into the city, and it is the terminus of the MRT Green Line. Direct coaches (route 1860) also run from Taoyuan Airport, and Taichung International Airport has flights to Kinmen, Penghu, Matsu and Hualien plus regional international routes.

Getting around

The MRT Green Line (18 stations, opened April 2021) runs from HSR Taichung through Nantun and Xitun to Beitun; city buses cover the rest and take EasyCard or iPASS. YouBike 2.0 is widespread and taxis are easy to find. Construction of the MRT Blue Line began in June 2025.

When to go

October to April is the dry, sunny season; the city gets about 1,700 mm of rain a year, less than most of Taiwan. Summers are hot with afternoon storms, and typhoons are possible roughly July to October, though the mountains soften many. The Dajia Mazu pilgrimage sets out in the third lunar month (usually March or April), and the Taichung Jazz Festival is usually held in October.

Local tip

Go to the Gaomei Wetlands for late afternoon, when the sun sets over the flats and turbines; buses run from TRA Qingshui Station, so check the last return bus before you go.
