Getting there
Fly from Taipei Songshan to Taitung Airport (about 1 h; Uni Air and Mandarin Airlines fly daily). By TRA, the fastest trains from Taipei take about 4 h via Hualien. From Kaohsiung, the South-Link Line takes about 2 h.
Getting around
Distances are long, so a scooter or car is the practical choice for the coast and the Rift Valley. TRA local trains link the valley towns (Luye, Guanshan, Chishang), and the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle runs an East Coast Line (8101) out of Taitung.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable; summer is hot, with typhoons roughly July to October. The Taiwan International Balloon Festival fills Luye Highland in summer (the 2026 festival ran from early July to 20 August). The Handan firecracker procession falls on the Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the first lunar month (February or March).
Local tip
Taitung is the base for Green Island and Orchid Island. Ferries leave from Fugang Fishing Harbor on the city's north side, and Daily Air flies small 19-seat planes from Taitung Airport. Seats sell out, so book flights early.
