Before you go

Tamsui at a glance

A river-mouth town at the end of the Taipei Metro's red line, and a 19th-century treaty port. It keeps a 17th-century fort later used as the British consulate, an old shopping street along the Tamsui River, and evening views west to the sea and across the water to Bali District (八里).

Known for

  • Fort San Domingo 紅毛城

Built by the Spanish in 1628 and rebuilt in brick by the Dutch in 1644; the British used it as a consulate from 1868 to 1972.

  • Tamsui Old Street 淡水老街

Riverside shopping street and lanes near the metro station, crowded on weekends.

  • A-gei 阿給

Tamsui's own snack: a fried tofu pouch stuffed with glass noodles, sealed with fish paste and served in sauce.

  • Iron eggs 鐵蛋

Eggs stewed and air-dried over and over until small, dark and chewy; sold in bags as a souvenir.

  • Fisherman's Wharf and Lover's Bridge 漁人碼頭・情人橋

Waterfront at the river mouth, reached by ferry or light rail; the usual sunset spot.

  • Danjiang Bridge 淡江大橋

Zaha Hadid Architects' single-tower cable-stayed bridge to Bali, opened to traffic on 12 May 2026.

Getting there

Take the Taipei Metro red line (Tamsui-Xinyi) to its terminus, Tamsui Station, about 35 min from Taipei Main Station. From Taoyuan Airport, take the Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station and change to the red line, about 1 h 30 min in all.

Getting around

Walk the waterfront from the station. Ferries from Tamsui wharf cross to Bali and run to Fisherman's Wharf, and take EasyCard. The Danhai light rail runs from Hongshulin Station to Kanding (Green Mountain Line) and to Fisherman's Wharf (Blue Coast Line); buses and YouBike fill the gaps.

When to go

Spring and autumn. Summer evenings are best for sunset but hot; in winter the northeast monsoon makes the river mouth windy and damp, and typhoons come roughly July to October. Weekends are crowded. The Qingshui Zushi procession ('Tamsui Grand Worship', a listed intangible heritage event) takes over the old town on the 5th and 6th days of the fifth lunar month, around the Dragon Boat Festival (late May or June).

Local tip

Check the destination on red-line trains: some terminate at Beitou. If yours does, get off at Beitou and catch the next train marked Tamsui (淡水).
