Before you go

Taoyuan at a glance

The city most travelers land in: Taoyuan International Airport is in its Dayuan District and the HSR station is in Zhongli. Beyond the airport it is a working industrial city with a large Hakka population in its southern districts, Daxi's carved Japanese-era shopfronts and dried tofu, and Atayal mountain country in Fuxing.

Known for

  • Daxi Old Street 大溪老街

Heping, Zhongshan and Zhongyang Roads, where Taisho-era merchants mixed Baroque pediments with Minnan motifs; Daxi was a river port on the Dahan River.

  • Daxi dried tofu 大溪豆乾

Dark, soy-braised dried tofu, the town's best-known product, sold along the old streets.

  • Cihu Mausoleum 慈湖陵寢

Chiang Kai-shek's resting place outside Daxi, next to a park of relocated Chiang statues; as of 2026 an honor-guard changeover is held there, cancelled in rain.

  • Lalashan giant trees 拉拉山巨木群

Trail of 24 numbered giant red cypresses in Fuxing District, about 4 km round trip; reached by mountain road from Baling.

  • Longgang mi-gan 龍岡米干

Yunnanese rice-sheet noodles brought by Nationalist troops who withdrew from Burma; the Longgang area of Zhongli holds a mi-gan festival each spring.

  • Shimen Reservoir 石門水庫

Large reservoir on the Dahan River above Daxi, often paired with a Daxi and Cihu day.

Getting there

From Taipei, HSR to Taoyuan Station (in Zhongli's Qingpu area) takes about 20 min, and TRA to Taoyuan or Zhongli stations about 30 to 45 min. The Airport MRT links Taipei Main Station, the airport (in Dayuan District) and HSR Taoyuan Station (A18), which is about 16 to 19 min from Terminal 1.

Getting around

The hubs are spread out: the Airport MRT serves the airport, HSR Taoyuan and Zhongli's A21 and A22 stops, but as of October 2026 it does not reach the TRA Taoyuan or Zhongli stations, and the Taoyuan Metro Green Line has not opened. City buses and the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 501 (Daxi Express, from HSR Taoyuan Station) serve Daxi; Fuxing's mountain roads need a car or tour.

When to go

Autumn and spring. Summer typhoons and heavy rain close Fuxing's mountain roads; as of October 2026 the Lalashan forest road is under controlled access after typhoon rockfall. The Longgang Mi-gan Festival is held each spring, and Daxi's Guan Gong birthday procession falls on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, usually July or August.

Local tip

Taoyuan's airport, HSR station and TRA stations are in different districts. The Airport MRT connects the airport and HSR Taoyuan in under 20 minutes, but for TRA Taoyuan or Zhongli stations you need a bus or taxi.
