Taroko Gorge at a glance
Taroko is a marble gorge cut by the Liwu River (立霧溪) through the Central Mountain Range, a short drive north of Hualien City, and the heart of Taroko National Park. Its name comes from the Truku people, whose villages are in the area. The April 2024 earthquake brought down rock across the gorge, and as of October 2026 it is only partly open.

Qingshui Cliffs 清水斷崖
Sea cliffs dropping straight into the Pacific. The Chongde Trail and the Chongde Recreation Area viewpoint reopened after the earthquake.
Tianxiang 天祥
Recreation area at the top of the lower gorge. It has reopened, but as of October 2026 you can drive there only within the Highway 8 release windows.
Tunnel of Nine Turns 九曲洞
The gorge's narrowest stretch. The park said in March 2026 it would reopen later that year; it was still closed in late September 2026.
Swallow Grotto 燕子口
Cliffside walk past swallow-nest holes in the rock. Closed; in March 2026 the park said it would not be repaired until 2031.
Shakadang Trail 砂卡礑步道
Riverside path along clear blue-green water. Closed since the earthquake; in March 2026 the park said it would not be repaired until 2031.
Eternal Spring Shrine 長春祠
Shrine beside a waterfall to the 212 veterans who died building the highway in 1956–1960. In March 2026 the park said its trail would not reopen before 2029.
Getting there
Take a TRA train from Taipei to Xincheng (Taroko) Station, about 2 h 15 min to 2 h 40 min on the faster trains that stop there, or to Hualien Station, about 2 h 15 min at best. From either station you can take a taxi. From Hualien Transfer Station, Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 310 runs to the Taroko Visitor Center at the mouth of the gorge.
Getting around
As of September 2026 no public bus ran beyond the visitor center toward Tianxiang. You need a car, a scooter or a hired driver, and you can enter the gorge section of Highway 8 only during its release windows. Inside the controlled section you may have to keep moving with the released traffic rather than stop where you like.
When to go
Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are the usual choices. Heavy rain and typhoons (roughly July to October) set off rockfall and short-notice road closures, so keep your plans for the gorge flexible.
Local tip
Check the park's road-and-trail notices (taroko.gov.tw) and the Highway Bureau's traffic site (168.thb.gov.tw) on the morning you go. As of October 2026, on ordinary days traffic between the gorge entrance and Tianxiang was let through only from 6:30 to 8:00, 10:00 to 10:05, 12:00 to 13:00, 15:00 to 15:05 and 17:00 to 18:00, and the road was closed overnight from 18:30 to 6:30.

Is Taroko Gorge open after the 2024 earthquake?
Partly. As of late September 2026, the visitor center, the Taroko Terrace Trail, the Tianxiang area, the Daqingshui area, the Chongde Trail (Qingshui Cliffs) and the Dali–Datong Trail had reopened. Still closed were Shakadang, Swallow Grotto, Baiyang, the Zhuilu Old Trail, Eternal Spring Shrine, Buluowan and the Tunnel of Nine Turns. Highway 8 through the gorge opens only in set windows and closes overnight.
When will Shakadang and Swallow Grotto reopen?
Not soon. In March 2026, park headquarters said Shakadang, Swallow Grotto and Baiyang would not be repaired until 2031, and the Eternal Spring Shrine trail would not open before 2029. It said the Tunnel of Nine Turns and Buluowan would reopen later in 2026, but both were still closed in late September 2026. Check taroko.gov.tw before you plan around them.
