Su'ao Cold Spring 蘇澳冷泉
Naturally carbonated spring at about 22 °C, a short walk from Su'ao Station; found by the Japanese army in 1928.

Old Yilan banquet dishes turned snacks: gao zha is rich stock thickened, set and deep-fried; bu rou is battered, deep-fried pork strips.

Getting there
Buses through the Hsuehshan Tunnel (Freeway 5) leave from Taipei Bus Station, Taipei City Hall, Nangang and Banqiao for Jiaoxi, Yilan and Luodong, about 1 h to 1 h 30 min. TRA Puyuma and Tze-chiang trains from Taipei Main Station take about 1 h to 1 h 30 min. A direct bus from Taoyuan Airport to Jiaoxi, Yilan and Luodong takes about 2 h 30 min; as of 2026 it runs a few times a day. There is no high-speed rail to Yilan.
Getting around
The coastal towns (Toucheng, Jiaoxi, Yilan City, Luodong, Su'ao) sit on the TRA line and are linked by train and county buses; Taiwan Tourist Shuttle routes such as the Dongshan River line cover sights around Luodong and Wujie. For the mountains (Datong, Nan'ao, Taipingshan) a car or tour is more practical.
When to go
It rains a lot: Yilan City gets about 2,700 mm a year, with September and October wettest, typhoons in late summer and autumn, and northeast-monsoon drizzle through winter. Guishan Island is open to landings from 1 March to 30 November, the folkgame festival runs in July and August, and winter is hot-spring season in Jiaoxi.
Local tip
Apply for a Guishan Island landing permit online as early as you can: as of 2026, places are capped per day and per boat slot, Wednesdays are reserved for research, and the summit climb has a separate quota of about 100 people a day.

Is the train or the bus better from Taipei?
The bus through the Hsuehshan Tunnel is about an hour on a clear road and leaves from several Taipei terminals. On weekends and holidays the tunnel jams, especially heading back to Taipei, so the train (about 1 h to 1 h 30 min by Puyuma or Tze-chiang) is more predictable; book seats ahead on holidays.
