Getting there
THSR Yunlin Station is in Huwei, about 1 h 25 min from Taipei. It has no rail link, but express bus 201 reaches TRA Douliu Station in about 45 min, and regional buses run to Beigang, Xiluo and Mailiao. TRA West Coast line trains stop at Douliu and Dounan; from Taoyuan Airport, take the Airport MRT to HSR Taoyuan and the HSR south.
Getting around
Buses are sparse. Four Taiwan Tourist Shuttle lines (Douliu–Gukeng, Beigang–Huwei, Caoling and Yunxi) start from TRA Douliu or HSR Yunlin, but as of 2026 the Beigang–Huwei loop runs only once a day. A car or scooter is the practical way to link towns.
When to go
October to April is the drier season on the plain. Beigang's Mazu birthday procession falls on the 19th and 20th of the third lunar month (usually April or May), the Baishatun pilgrimage from Tongxiao in Miaoli reaches Chaotian Temple each spring, and the puppetry festival in Huwei runs in autumn. Typhoons are possible roughly July to October.
Local tip
On Beigang's procession days the town center is under traffic control and packed: arrive early, park outside the center or come by bus, and walk in.
