For every visitor

The rules everyone meets at the border

Passport

Passport must be valid for the whole planned stay (no fixed 6-month rule); US/Canada guidance: valid on the day of entry. Airlines may apply stricter rules. Safe standard: valid for your whole stay.

Arrival card

Incoming Passenger Card (paper), being replaced by the digital Australia Travel Declaration (ATD). On board / before arrival. ATD (digital, pilot): Qantas app passengers into Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne can pre-fill up to 72 hours before arrival and get a QR pass; expanding to remaining capitals (incl. Perth, Adelaide) before end-2026 and a webform at all airports/seaports before end-2027. Fee: Free.

Official form · free on the official site

Border systems for every visitor

Everyone except Australian and New Zealand citizens must hold a visa or ETA before travel (no visa on arrival). ETA (AUD 20 via app) or free eVisitor for eligible passports; Visitor visa (subclass 600) for others. NZ citizens receive a Special Category Visa on arrival.

Proof of funds

No fixed amount published for ETA/eVisitor; Visitor visa (600) applicants must show they can support themselves during the stay.

Travel insurance

Not required for an ordinary tourist visit on ETA/eVisitor; strongly advisable as Medicare does not cover most visitors.

Vaccinations

No routine vaccination requirement. Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from (or having been in) a yellow fever transmission-risk country.

Cash to declare at customs

AUD 10,000 or more (or foreign-currency equivalent) in cash must be declared on arrival and departure (State Dept: 'over 10,000 AUD ... must be declared').

Taxes, levies and fees

Passenger Movement Charge (departure tax) is built into air and cruise fares, so nothing is paid at the airport (AUD 70 since 1 July 2024; amount not re-verified this session). No tourist levy on entry.

Medicines, vapes and banned items

Very strict biosecurity: declare ALL food, plant material (including wooden articles), animal products, and contact with farms, farm animals, wilderness or freshwater in the past 30 days, or bin them before inspection; bags are X-rayed and undeclared items can bring heavy fines. Carry prescription medicines in original packaging with a doctor's prescription and check they are legal in Australia.

Your checklist, with the dates it is due

NUM builds it for your passport and your travel dates: the authorisation and when to apply, the arrival card and the day it opens, what to carry at the border, your own country's exit rules, and a calendar file for every deadline.

Every document here is issued by a government, and the official link is the only place to get it. Most arrival cards and many authorisations are free. NUM is not a visa service and cannot apply for anything. Rules change without notice: the official page always has the final word.
