The rules everyone meets at the border
Passport
At least 6 months validity (e-Visa rule: at the time of application; FCDO/Canada: 6 months after arrival). Machine-readable ordinary passport; diplomatic/official passports cannot use e-Visa. Safe standard: 6 months left on the day you arrive.
Arrival card
e-Arrival Card (digital disembarkation card). Online within 72 hours before arrival; mandatory since 1 Oct 2025 (replaces the paper disembarkation card) Fee: Free.

Border systems for every visitor
Health Self-Declaration Form on the Air Suvidha portal (airsuvidha.civilaviation.gov.in) for ALL international arrivals, Indian and foreign, introduced by the Health Ministry by late June 2026 because of the Ebola outbreak (WHO PHEIC). Submit up to 24 hours before arrival, ideally before boarding. Still listed by FCDO on 7 Oct 2026; may be withdrawn at short notice. Separate from the visa and the e-Arrival Card.
Onward ticket
e-Visa applicants should hold a return or onward ticket.
Proof of funds
e-Visa applicants should have sufficient money to spend during their stay.
Travel insurance
Not listed as an entry requirement on the official e-Visa portal or by FCDO.
Vaccinations
Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from (or having transited through an airport in) a yellow-fever risk country. Polio vaccination certificate required if arriving from a polio-affected country.
Cash to declare at customs
Declare foreign currency notes over USD 5,000, or over USD 10,000 in notes plus travellers cheques combined. Import/export of Indian rupees is restricted under RBI rules (Canada: non-residents may not import or export rupees).
Taxes, levies and fees
No arrival fee for e-Visa holders: nothing is payable at the airport and there is no express fee. e-Visa fees carry a 3% bank charge. Restricted/Protected Area Permits may carry their own fees.
Medicines, vapes and banned items
Carrying or using satellite phones and other satellite devices is illegal. Restricted/Protected Area Permits are needed for parts of the Northeast, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sikkim and border areas; FCDO says apply up to 3 months ahead via an Indian mission, or in India via the FRRO/state office. Declare any prohibited or dutiable goods.
Travelling with children
Each child needs their own passport and visa; children cannot be endorsed on a parent's passport for the e-Visa. India is not party to the Hague child-abduction arrangements with Canada (travel.gc.ca); carry custody/consent papers if travelling with one parent.

Every document here is issued by a government, and the official link is the only place to get it. Most arrival cards and many authorisations are free. NUM is not a visa service and cannot apply for anything. Rules change without notice: the official page always has the final word.
