Verified means NUM read it on a government page on 10–11 Oct 2026. Likely means a reputable source says it and one official page agreed. Not checked yet means NUM could not confirm it: use the official page. Fees are as published on that date and can change.

For every visitor

The rules everyone meets at the border

Passport

At least 6 months from the date of entry into Nepal (FCDO; US State Dept says 6 months beyond arrival). Canada advises 6 months beyond your planned departure and warns airlines may apply stricter rules, so 6 months past departure is the safe rule. Passports reported lost or stolen are refused. Safe standard: 6 months beyond the day you leave.

Arrival card

NepaliPort online arrival registration / visa-on-arrival form (Department of Immigration). Online up to 15 days before arrival (FCDO); Canada says foreign nationals arriving after 16 Sep 2025 must register on the NepaliPort website or app. Forms and self-service terminals are also available at the airport, but the queue is longer. Fee: Free (the visa fee is paid at the airport).

Official form · free on the official site

Border systems for every visitor

No separate e-authorisation. Every foreign visitor except Indian nationals needs a tourist visa, obtained on arrival (most nationalities) or in advance from a Nepali mission. Registration on NepaliPort before arrival is expected (see arrival card).

Onward ticket

Not listed as an entry requirement by FCDO, US State Dept or Canada.

Proof of funds

Not listed as an entry requirement by FCDO, US State Dept or Canada.

Travel insurance

Not a formal visa condition, but FCDO says border control may ask to see travel insurance covering healthcare, repatriation and emergencies. For trekking or climbing, cover for helicopter rescue is strongly advised.

Vaccinations

Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from a country with yellow fever transmission risk (FCDO); Canada adds transit through an airport in such a country. A polio vaccination certificate may be required if arriving from certain polio-risk countries (FCDO). Otherwise no vaccinations required (US State Dept).

Cash to declare at customs

Declare on the customs form on arrival any cash above USD 5,000 in banknotes, or above USD 10,000 in banknotes and travellers' cheques combined, and keep the certified declaration (FCDO). US State Dept gives USD 5,000 as the entry and exit limit. Taking Nepalese rupee banknotes out of Nepal is illegal, and Indian rupee notes above INR 100 are prohibited (Canada). Gold ornaments up to 50 g and silver up to 100 g are allowed; undeclared gold or silver can bring fines equal to the value, confiscation and 1 month to 5 years in prison (FCDO).

Taxes, levies and fees

Trekking: a TIMS card (NPR 2,000; NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals) issued through a government-registered trekking agency. Since 31 Mar 2023, trekkers on listed protected-area routes (including Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu, Kanchenjunga and Mustang) must be accompanied by a licensed guide. National park and conservation area entry permits are separate. Restricted areas need a Restricted Area Permit from the Department of Immigration (Kalikasthan, Kathmandu), for example Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpa USD 50 per day; Manaslu USD 100 per week Sep-Nov (then USD 15/day) or USD 75 per week Dec-Aug (then USD 10/day); Tsum Valley USD 40 per week Sep-Nov or USD 30 Dec-Aug (then USD 7/day).

Medicines, vapes and banned items

CBD products are illegal (seizure and drug-possession charges). Firearms, imitation firearms and firearm-shaped jewellery are prohibited. Gold and silver are tightly limited (see cash limits). Do not photograph military installations, checkpoints or personnel.

Travelling with children

Children under 10 get a free tourist visa, except US citizens (Nepal Tourism Board). A parent travelling alone with a child should consider carrying a notarised consent letter from the other parent (US State Dept). The Hague Child Abduction Convention does not apply between Canada and Nepal.

Your checklist, with the dates it is due

NUM builds it for your passport and your travel dates: the authorisation and when to apply, the arrival card and the day it opens, what to carry at the border, your own country's exit rules, and a calendar file for every deadline.

Every document here is issued by a government, and the official link is the only place to get it. Most arrival cards and many authorisations are free. NUM is not a visa service and cannot apply for anything. Rules change without notice: the official page always has the final word.
