The rules everyone meets at the border
Passport
At least 6 months' validity from the date of arrival. Safe standard: 6 months left on the day you arrive.
Border systems for every visitor
Mandatory Tanzanian government inbound travel insurance for all non-resident visitors (Zanzibar since 1 Oct 2024; mainland since 1 Oct 2026). Residents exempt.
Onward ticket
You must show a return or onward ticket on arrival at the entry point.
Travel insurance
Required. Government inbound travel insurance is compulsory for all non-resident visitors to mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, even if you hold your own policy. Valid for the stay up to 92 days. Buy it only for your first port of entry: mainland first = National Insurance Corporation (NIC, inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz); Zanzibar first = Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC, visitzanzibar.go.tz). Online beforehand or on arrival; entry can be refused without it. ZIC policies bought before 1 Oct 2026 can be used when the mainland is the first port of entry. Residents exempt. Price: USD 44 per person for the Zanzibar policy (Tanzanian embassy notice); the mainland NIC price is not shown on official pages we could read (reported as USD 44 per adult, USD 22 for children 3-17, free under 3 - unconfirmed).
Vaccinations
Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from a yellow fever risk country, including transits of 12+ hours; some airlines check it on departure. Mpox temperature checks at all entry points; Ebola screening for arrivals from DRC.
Cash to declare at customs
Declare more than USD 10,000 (or equivalent) on entry and exit. Non-residents may not import or export Tanzanian shillings.
Taxes, levies and fees
The compulsory inbound travel insurance (USD 44 per person for the Zanzibar policy) is effectively an entry charge (see travel_insurance).
Medicines, vapes and banned items
Do not bring animal-skin accessories (can lead to questioning/detention on departure). Exporting items such as horns or seashells without a certified export permit from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism is illegal.
