Verified means NUM read it on a government page on 10–11 Oct 2026. Likely means a reputable source says it and one official page agreed. Not checked yet means NUM could not confirm it: use the official page. Fees are as published on that date and can change.

For every visitor

The rules everyone meets at the border

Passport

Visa applicants: passport valid at least 6 months after the planned departure from Ireland. Visa-exempt visitors: Irish immigration publishes no minimum; carry a passport valid for the whole stay (airlines may require more). British citizens do not legally need a passport, but carriers may require one. Safe standard: valid for your whole stay.

Arrival card

No arrival card for most visitors.

Border systems for every visitor

None. Ireland is outside Schengen, so the EU Entry/Exit System and ETIAS do not apply. No Irish ETA is in force. Common Travel Area with the UK: a UK visa or ETA does not allow entry to Ireland (except under the visa waiver programme), and an Irish visa does not allow entry to the UK (except BIVS).

Onward ticket

Not listed as mandatory, but bring a travel itinerary; you must show you will leave before your permission expires.

Proof of funds

Listed as a useful document at the border; visa applicants must show they can support themselves without public funds.

Travel insurance

Required for visa holders (visa condition: travel or medical insurance for the whole trip, show on arrival if asked). Recommended for everyone else; health insurance is listed as a useful border document.

Vaccinations

FCDO lists no specific vaccination entry requirement; see TravelHealthPro.

Cash to declare at customs

Declare cash or traveller's cheques worth EUR 10,000 or more entering or leaving (EU rule). Keep the certified declaration or the cash can be seized on exit.

Medicines, vapes and banned items

Declare anything prohibited or subject to tax or duty. Meat, milk and products containing them cannot be brought into EU countries from outside the EU (exceptions: powdered baby milk, baby food, special medical/pet foods).

Travelling with children

For visa applications: child travelling with both parents needs the original birth certificate; with one parent, an original consent letter from the other parent plus a copy of their passport/ID; with another adult or alone, consent letters from both parents plus copies of their IDs; adults hosting unaccompanied children must be Garda vetted. Non-visa nationals should carry similar documents.

Your checklist, with the dates it is due

NUM builds it for your passport and your travel dates: the authorisation and when to apply, the arrival card and the day it opens, what to carry at the border, your own country's exit rules, and a calendar file for every deadline.

Every document here is issued by a government, and the official link is the only place to get it. Most arrival cards and many authorisations are free. NUM is not a visa service and cannot apply for anything. Rules change without notice: the official page always has the final word.
