For every visitor

The rules everyone meets at the border

Passport

Passport must be valid for the length of the planned stay; airlines and transit countries may require more. US citizens are advised to carry a passport; other proof of citizenship and ID is accepted at land/sea. Safe standard: valid for your whole stay.

Arrival card

No arrival card for most visitors.

Official form

Border systems for every visitor

Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA (CAD 7) to fly to or transit through Canada; not needed by land or sea. US citizens and US permanent residents are exempt. Citizens of 17 visa-required countries (incl. BR, MX, MY, TH, PH, ID among ours) may use a conditional eTA when flying if they held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years or hold a valid US nonimmigrant visa. Dual Canadian citizens must use a Canadian passport.

Onward ticket

Border officials may ask for a return or onward ticket.

Proof of funds

Officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds for the stay, even if staying with family or friends; no fixed amount published for visitors.

Travel insurance

Not required for ordinary visitors (the parent/grandparent super visa has its own medical-insurance condition). Provincial health plans do not cover visitors.

Vaccinations

No vaccinations required for entry.

Cash to declare at customs

Declare currency and monetary instruments of CAD 10,000 or more (or equivalent) when entering or leaving.

Taxes, levies and fees

No entry or departure tax collected at the border; pre-travel costs are the eTA (CAD 7) or visitor visa (CAD 100 + CAD 85 biometrics).

Medicines, vapes and banned items

Cannabis in any form (including edibles, extracts and CBD products) cannot be taken across the border, even between legal jurisdictions. Firearms and ammunition must be declared using Canadian Firearms Program forms. Undeclared food, plant and animal products are seized and can bring fines; declare farm visits.

Travelling with children

A child travelling alone, with one parent or with another adult should carry a consent letter from the non-travelling parent(s)/guardian(s) with their full name, address and phone number (notarisation helps), plus ID and any custody papers; officers may question children.

Your checklist, with the dates it is due

NUM builds it for your passport and your travel dates: the authorisation and when to apply, the arrival card and the day it opens, what to carry at the border, your own country's exit rules, and a calendar file for every deadline.

Every document here is issued by a government, and the official link is the only place to get it. Most arrival cards and many authorisations are free. NUM is not a visa service and cannot apply for anything. Rules change without notice: the official page always has the final word.
