Where the concierge points people first
- Fontana di Trevi — Go at seven in the morning or after midnight. Any other hour you are looking at the back of a phone, and the piazza is small enough that this genuinely decides whether the visit was worth it. (41.9010, 12.4833)
- Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi — Bernini's, in the middle of Piazza Navona, with the four river gods. The one to sit with rather than circle — take a seat on the north side where the afternoon light hits the obelisk. (41.8989, 12.4731)
- Fontana Dell'Acqua Paola — Up on the Janiculum, and the reason to climb is not the fountain but what is behind you when you turn around: the whole city, laid flat, for free. (41.8888, 12.4642)
- Fontana dei Libri — A small wall fountain on Via degli Staderari, carved with books and a stag's head for the old university quarter. Nobody queues for it and it is thirty seconds off a street you were walking anyway. (41.8984, 12.4742)
- Fontana della Botte — In Trastevere, shaped like a wine barrel with two spouts, a nod to the carts that brought wine down from the Castelli. Local, small, and the sort of thing you only find if somebody points at it. (41.8886, 12.4710)

The fountains that matter most are the ones nobody photographs
Rome has roughly 2,500 nasoni — cast-iron street taps with a curved spout, running cold, drinkable, free, all day and all night. That is the fountain fact that actually changes a day in August: you do not need to buy water in Rome, ever. Block the end of the spout with a finger and a jet arcs up through the small hole on top, which is how Romans drink from them without touching anything. The ten fountains listed here are the monuments; the nasoni are the plumbing, and the plumbing is what you will use.
