For every visitor

The rules everyone meets at the border

Passport

Carry at least 6 months' validity. FCDO (reviewed 19 Aug 2026, updated 7 Oct 2026): valid at least 6 months from arrival. Irish DFA: minimum 6 months. Canada: 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave. US State Dept: 3 months, but 6 months for its visa-on-arrival entry. Visit Qatar: at least 3 months from arrival. German FO (Oct 2026): 6 months at entry. Netherlands Worldwide (Sep 2026): at least 3 months on arrival. France Diplomatie: more than 6 months. Safe standard: 6 months beyond the day you leave.

Arrival card

No arrival card for most visitors.

Border systems for every visitor

No Qatar-wide authorization for visa-free nationalities. Visit Qatar: 'Visa-free entry is now the new term defining previously visa on arrival. Nothing changed except the name.' Nationalities on Visit Qatar's fee list (e.g. Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines, Nigeria) pay QAR 100: either a Hayya e-visa before travel or a visa on arrival tied to a prepaid Discover Qatar hotel booking. Hayya types: A1 tourist, A2 GCC residents, A3 holders of Schengen/UK/US/Canada/Australia/NZ visas or residence. GCC nationals need only a passport or GCC ID.

Onward ticket

A confirmed return or onward ticket is required (Visit Qatar: 'Confirmed round ticket is required'; State Dept: return or onward ticket).

Travel insurance

Required. Stays over 30 days: FCDO says you must buy health insurance from a Ministry of Public Health (MOPH)-registered provider before travel; the standard premium is QAR 50 per person per month. Canada goes further and says an MOPH-recognised policy is needed to enter. Visit Qatar only recommends insurance and says it can be bought on arrival. The Irish DFA and State Dept do not list it as an entry requirement. Practical rule: buy MOPH-registered cover for any stay over 30 days, and consider it for shorter stays. German FO (Oct 2026): since 2023 MOPH-accredited health insurance is compulsory on entry for stays over 30 days.

Vaccinations

FCDO: yellow fever certificate if arriving from a transmission-risk country; polio certificate in some circumstances. Canada: yellow fever proof if coming from a country where it occurs. State Dept quick facts: none.

Cash to declare at customs

Declare money, cheques, precious metals or gems worth more than QAR 50,000 on entry or exit (declaration form). State Dept quick facts say there are no currency restrictions, but FCDO and Canada both give the QAR 50,000 declaration rule.

Taxes, levies and fees

Visa-free entry is free for most eligible nationalities. Fee-list nationalities pay QAR 100 (Hayya e-visa or visa on arrival with a Discover Qatar hotel booking). The US State Dept (page dated Jan 2025) says US citizens pay a USD 21 fee on arrival, but Visit Qatar shows no fee for them. MOPH health insurance for stays over 30 days costs about QAR 50 a month.

Medicines, vapes and banned items

Vapes and e-cigarette products are illegal to import or sell, whatever the quantity or use (FCDO, Irish DFA). CBD and THC products are illegal (State Dept). Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines are controlled: carry the prescription and a medical report in English or Arabic issued within the last 6 months; MOPH runs an electronic permit service for controlled medicines (FCDO update, 19 Aug 2026). Drones: State Dept says importing drones is prohibited by customs, and FCDO says drone use is regulated, with fines, prison or confiscation for breaches. Pork products, alcohol over the duty-free allowance, narcotics, weapons and pornography are prohibited.

Travelling with children

A child in a custody dispute may be stopped from leaving Qatar (FCDO). Qatar does not recognise dual nationality: children of a Qatari father are Qatari and must enter and leave on a Qatari passport (State Dept, Canada). Family-residence sponsors can be notified when dependants try to leave (State Dept).

Your checklist, with the dates it is due

NUM builds it for your passport and your travel dates: the authorisation and when to apply, the arrival card and the day it opens, what to carry at the border, your own country's exit rules, and a calendar file for every deadline.

Every document here is issued by a government, and the official link is the only place to get it. Most arrival cards and many authorisations are free. NUM is not a visa service and cannot apply for anything. Rules change without notice: the official page always has the final word.
